Oscar winner Cillian Murphy is to appear in Peaky Blinders. He said in a statement: “This is for the fans.” Netflix has given the green light to a film based on the popular series, with Murphy playing Thomas Shelby, a war hero turned gangster who makes his way in the world of crime in 1900s Birmingham. While the film has been described as a “continuation” of the series, plot details are being kept under wraps.
“Peaky Blinders” is a British crime drama series set in England after World War I. It follows the Shelby crime family, led by the cunning and ambitious Tommy Shelby (Murphy), as they rise in the underworld of organized crime and political intrigue. The series is known for its strong storylines, complex characters, and stylish cinematography, while also capturing the essence of post-war Britain. Not only that, but the series has an overall score of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Tom Harper (Heart of Stone, The Aeronauts, War & Peace) is directing the untitled film. Harper is no stranger to Peaky, having directed the back half of Season 1.
Production is set to begin later this year from a script by Peaky creator Steven Knight. Producers are Karin Mandabach, Knight, Murphy and Guy Heely. Executive producers include Harper, David Kosse, Jamie Glazebrook, Andrew Warren and David Mason. The feature will be made in association with BBC Film.
Knight told Birmingham World in March that the film was moving forward with Murphy; he also previously told Deadline that the film was going to happen. Still, this is the first official confirmation with a studio greenlight.

Plot details and further casting are being kept under wraps, although Knight previously told Deadline that the film would be set during World War II.
IGN also reported that there could be two new spinoffs in this franchise. One of them could be set in 20th century Boston, and the other could center around Thomas Shelby’s aunt Polly Gray.
There’s no projected release date given the film’s early development, but hopefully it won’t be long before we see Murphy’s Thomas Shelby on our screens again. In the meantime, you can check out the best Netflix movies in 2024 or stream all six seasons of “Peaky Blinders” on Netflix right now.
