The Jeep Wrangler 4xe is the best-selling plug-in hybrid in America and its powertrain will soon come to the Gladiator. Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa confirmed the news on LinkedIn and said the Gladiator 4xe will arrive next year.
Filosa skipped all the technical details about the upcoming plug-in Gladiator, but it will likely feature the same powertrain found on the Wrangler PHEV. This is a 2.0-liter inline-four that works together with a starter generator and an electric motor integrated into an eight-speed gearbox.
Filosa didn’t share any details other than confirming that a 2025 Jeep Gladiator 4xe is coming, but it doesn’t take a private detective’s license to piece together a clear picture. Just look at the current 4xe models, the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler, for clues; Well, look especially closely at the Wrangler 4xe, as its powertrain is arranged in a frame similar to the Gladiator’s layout.
The Most Affordable Hybrid SUV With Over 500 Miles Of Driving Range In 2024
If you look carefully, you will see that the pictures in this article are of the 2024 Jeep Gladiator. Jeep hasn’t shared any images of the 2025 model yet, and besides, we don’t think the 2025 Gladiator 4xe will look that much different. However, you should expect it to have the same blue tow hooks, badging, and optional graphics that you’ll find on other 4xe models like the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee.
On the plug-in hybrid Wrangler, the high-voltage lithium-ion battery that provides juice to the electric motor has a capacity of 17 kilowatt-hours, resulting in an EPA-estimated all-electric range of 22 miles.
Again, we don’t know if these features will be the same on the Gladiator, but they’re a good starting point for those shopping around. It’s also worth noting that because the electric motor is integrated into the gearbox, the Wrangler and upcoming Gladiator PHEV retain their renowned off-road capability as the drivetrain remains unchanged compared to their ICE siblings. By the way, the factory solid front and rear axles are still present.
To be manufactured at the same Toledo, Ohio plant as the Wrangler and ICE Gladiator, the upcoming plug-in Jeep pickup will be joined by range-extending electric versions of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer in 2025, while fully electric versions of both SUVs will follow in 2025. Will come in 2027. The agreement between Stellantis and the United Auto Workers union says an all-electric Grand Cherokee will also launch in 2027, while the Wrangler will get full electric and range-extended versions a year later.
The Tesla Model Y is at its lowest price yet
The Gladiator 4xe should be similar and will likely cost much more. We can expect to know more in the coming months, but pricing for the Wrangler Sport S 4xe starts at $50,695 and is a little more than $10,000 more than the four-door Wrangler Sport S. If this pattern applies to the Gladiator 4xe, the model will likely cost around $52,000.
It’s not cheap, but the Wrangler 4xe is eligible for a $3,750 federal tax credit. This suggests that Gladiator 4xe is also getting a boost, but only time will tell.
